The Rugby Buddy Mindset Academy

Today, being a young rugby player isn't just about a love for the game, although that's what I'm aiming for!

The world our children are growing up in is different from the one we knew just a few years ago. It’s faster, louder, more demanding; and the pull of success can feel almost impossible to escape. Even though academy pathways officially begin later than ever, the thought of being left behind starts early. That voice in their head, the one whispering “you’ve got to get ahead, you’ve got to stand out”, is hard to silence.

They scroll through feeds filled with highlight reels, comparison always just a swipe away. They see teammates posting big moments, friends chasing streaks, followers climbing. And suddenly, worth isn’t measured by effort or progress, but by numbers on a screen.

On top of that, they’re carrying the weight of competition. Some days soaring, some days stumbling. Feedback from coaches, from teammates, even from strangers online, it all stacks up. A mistake in a match isn’t just a mistake anymore; it feels like a spotlight exposing flaws. And when injury strikes, it’s not only the physical pain, it’s the fear: “Will I fall behind? Will I be the same when I come back? Will my confidence ever return?”

Then there’s schoolwork, friendship circles, endless notifications tugging at their focus. Every direction pulls them away from the calm they desperately need. And underneath all of it runs one constant thread: “Am I doing enough?” or “Am I enough?”

But I also understand the parents. I understand you. Because all you really want is to protect your child’s journey as they grow. You want to see them thrive, not just on the rugby field, but in life.

You hope they find joy in the game, that they laugh with teammates, that they carry memories of muddy boots, hard tackles, and shared victories long after the final whistle. You want rugby to teach them the right lessons, the ones about character, resilience, and working for something bigger than themselves.

More than anything, you want them to be strong. Not just strong in body, but strong in mind, the kind of strength that gives them confidence to chase big dreams, and the wisdom to face setbacks without breaking.

“Our son Tom started working with Charlie last season. He has been part of a small group of similar stage rugby players involved in online workshops with Charlie. The conversations at these sessions have had a huge positive impact on Tom’s mindset, not just in terms of his rugby but also managing life and school alongside his sports activities and ambitions. Charlie is a great communicator and Tom hugely respects him because he has been there and done it at the highest level. Through these sessions, Charlie has passed on invaluable lessons on how to deal with good news and bad, injuries and selection decisions, physical and mental conditioning and clashes of interest. Charlie has a calm, understated confidence. He has been a fantastic role model and influence for Tom, and we cannot thank him enough.”

"I now feel more in control mentally. I am calmer during games, especially after mistakes and I am much more organised with my school work, which in turn means I am less stressed. The community has enabled me to see I am not the only one experiencing these things. If you're thinking about joining, do it. Charlie has so much knowledge to offer."

"I just wanted to send a heartfelt thank you for the time and effort you've given to mentoring Izaac. He's told me on numerous occasions how glad he is to have done it, and it’s been clear to see the positive impact your guidance has had – not just on his game, but on his mindset too. Your insight and approach have made a real difference, and I’m incredibly grateful"

"After a long injury, I thought I'd be worse when I started playing again. But after using one of the techniques, I was surprised how much of a positive difference it made. I feel really proud of myself. The community really helped me too and getting their support was brilliant. I'd give this a 10/10"

"For anyone considering joining, it's been brilliant. I can really see the step change in Millar in terms of his resilience and consistency. He's been able to implement what he's learnt on the field. The course was absolutely fantastic; a real value add and by Charlie always being available, it has allowed the lads to open up and be the best versions of themselves"

"I was encouraged to start this program by my Head of Rugby at school. He thought it would help me manage the pressure that I place on myself and enable me to bounce back from mistakes I make in matches. Having finished the course, I believe it has completely changed my perspective. I used to overthink everything but now I have so many techniques I can use to help me through those difficult moments. My self talk has really improved. If you are thinking of joining, 100% do it. It’s so worth it!"
